Typically, musicians create mixtapes in order to have themselves promoted in between albums. The creation of a mixtape requires preparation and time. However, when it is already done, some work still must be done. It is nice to have a mixtape, however, if nobody has some idea about it, then it is useless. If you have the mixtape ready, you will have to walk around town to get word of it out.
Come up with a list of record stores where you can have the mixtape taken to so it is distributed. You must have determined if you would like to give out or sell the mixtape. Several record shops are willing to have your mixtape sold on the basis of consignment if it suits the shop. If you have decided to have the mixtape given away to those interested, pitch the idea to the manager of the store as well. You will, either way, want to have the mixtape in stores.
Allocate a few days for visiting every record store on the list. Have a copy of your mixtape taken along to leave with that person managing the store. Have distribution options discussed right before leaving the shop and note down how every shop operates.
Wait for a few days before making rounds once more. Visit every store you have previously visited and then follow up with the person managing the store.
Create a listing of publications which you like to have the mixtape featured in. Search the Internet for publications which focus on the kind of music which you play. Keep in mind that several publications have a process of submission for music. Make sure of following their process and have the mixtape sent in.
Choose a song from your mixtape which you believe would have the greatest appeal and have it offered for free download via your own website or social media sites just like SoundCloud. Also, it is a must that you consistently follow up. It might take time before media outlets will feature the mixtape. However, you could get faster results through record shops. The primary goal is getting the mixtape to as many individuals as possible.
Remember that in order to have the mixtape sold legally, it needs to have original music only. If you have sampled the music of other artists, you first need to acquire all needed clearances right before any attempt to sell the mixtape. Otherwise, you could end up in legal trouble.
Still, another way to promote your mixtape is to have its contents uploaded on various social media sites, such as SoundCloud or Youtube, depending on what you prefer. Many musicians promoted their music through Soundcloud. In fact there are some already who became popular overnight by just sharing their music in Soundlcoud. As soon as you have the contents of the mixtape promoted, be sure that you tell your friends about it because the more Soundcloud plays you get the more it will attract potential listeners. Uploading mixtape contents on social media is only a great option, however, if you have no plans to sell it. Posting the mixtape contents on social media sites while selling it is not advisable.
